Are your papers in order?
There is no age to die or become unfit to manage one’s property! Take advantage of the summer to put your papers in order and group them together.
Your insurance contracts
You took out a life insurance policy 20 years ago. In what drawer is it and above all does it always corresponds to your needs? If it is a covertibile temporary life policy, is the deadline to convert it approaching? Is your beneficiary named or is it the legal heirs? Do you know the difference? Take the time to read it again. Same thing applies for your disability and critical illness policies.
Your marriage contract, will, mandate of incapacity
No problem, I am not married, I live in a common-law relationship. Read the article at the end of this newsletter.
You have no will and no mandate of incapacity? You expose your loved ones to a host of painful situations if you die suddenly or become unable to manage your estate.
I strongly urge you to review or draw up your will and your mandate of incapacity this summer, if it is not already done. Read one of the articles that follows.
Your balance sheet
Do you have an up dated balance sheet? Make a list of your assets, indicating whom to contact if necessary. Same thing for your liabilities. Do not leave skeletons in your closet.
To take stock
When you have finished this exercise, make an appointment with me. We will identify possible gaps in the management of your estate and we will put in place appropriate corrective measures, if necessary.
Have a great summer!
